Phillips 66 Ltd is a global energy manufacturing and logistics company with 13,000+ employees across 65+ countries. They unlocked full productivity from Microsoft Teams by adopting new WorkingSm@rt® ways of working, saving time, reducing internal emails and creating a consistent, collaborative culture.

Objectives

Phillips 66 set out to modernise digital collaboration at its Humber Refinery by embedding consistent and productive use of Microsoft Teams. The key objectives were to:

​

  • Ensure consistent use of Teams across all refinery staff

  • Define clear guidelines on when to use Email, Teams Posts, or Chat

  • Standardise Teams structures and channel naming conventions

  • Centralise shared filing in Teams/SharePoint to reduce duplication and version issues

  • Improve meeting outcomes by ensuring actions and follow-ups are captured and visible

Training Approach

Priority Management International delivered a multi-part blended learning programme to more than 240 employees:

​

  1.  Pre-Training “Sizzle” Campaign

  • A Modern Working awareness campaign built anticipation with teaser posters
     

      2. Interactive Training & Coaching

  • Instructor-led online classes delivered in groups of up to 20, split into two interactive sessions.

  • Practical, safe hands-on exercises in a practice Team, aligned to real refinery workflows.

  • Individual 30-minute online coaching sessions followed, helping participants embed new habits into daily work.

The programme created a step-change in digital collaboration across the Humber Refinery:

 

  • Time savings of around 40 minutes per person, per day – equivalent to +18 extra days of productivity per year,  per person

  • Consistency achieved with one set of refinery-wide Guidelines covering communications, file sharing, and meeting management

  • Significant reduction in internal emails, with Teams Posts replacing fragmented chats and lengthy email chains

  • Meetings became more effective, with actions visible to all, and easy to track

Summary

The Phillips 66 Humber Refinery rollout demonstrates that full productivity from Microsoft Teams is only achieved when new WorkingSm@rt® ways of working are adopted.

 

The programme went beyond tool training by introducing consistent behaviours and clear Guidelines that enabled staff to unlock the platform’s full potential.


With practical application and strong leadership support, the refinery delivered measurable productivity gains and built a modern, collaborative culture ready for the future of work.
